About CCE

Coal Chemistry Europe represents the producers of chemicals derived from coal.

We promote the coal chemicals industry within a climate-neutral and circular European economy. Our industry is a solution provider and partner in innovation, supporting the EU’s Green Deal goals and strategic autonomy objectives.

OUR mission

Raising awareness

of the industry’s contribution to building blocks that are essential to Europe’s sustainable future

Advocating

for the use of coal chemicals and their associated products in the marketplace

Communicating

data-driven industry positions to key stakeholders

Exchanging

technology and information with members, customers and other stakeholders

Promoting

best practices in health, safety, and the environment across the industry

Our Vision

Your partner for circular solutions.

Coal chemicals are inherently circular: by converting the by-products of steel production into valuable new products and enhancing the performance and durability of many other applications, the industry makes a direct contribution to Europe’s climate objectives by a systematic energy efficiency approach.

01.

A sustainable industry

Coal chemistry supports EU sustainability objectives and a climate neutral Europe by promoting resource efficiency (and waste minimisation through avoiding the incineration of steel production by-products), CO2 savings, and lower carbon solutions.

02.

A versatile industry

Highly versatile, coal chemicals provide a local, European source of critical raw materials that support the resilience and strategic autonomy of the European economy.

03.

A strategic industry

Our products are essential to many innovative technologies and solutions vital in meeting several of Europe’s key challenges. From air purification systems to superplasticisers essential in the construction sector, coal chemicals have a significant role to play in strategic industries and innovations.

Our Commitments…

… to sustainability

Coal Chemistry Europe’s members support the EU’s ambition of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 by utilising ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BATs) in their plants and by continuously improving their plans for the reduction of air emissions, such as benzene. Our commitment to sustainability is also visible in the actions we have taken towards smoke emissions reduction, and SOx/NOx emissions reduction.

… to health & safety

Alongside the zero-pollution ambition, we support the goal of ensuring that no harmful substances are released into the environment nor represent a threat to human health. The coal chemicals production process is carefully controlled and emissions to the environment have been minimised in recent years. Coal tar refineries and coal chemical plants are equipped with high-integrity systems, using a wide range of technologies to provide emissions control.
